Movement around an exhibition - Stop Motion

This visual stop motion podcast demonstrates the process I went through to create a model which illustrated the movement of a particular person around an art gallery. The movement is traced by a marker and the colour on the walls represents where they stopped and took in the art on the walls. The audio podcast that is uploaded above is a recorded informal interview of the person who I was observing walking around the gallery which relates to this visual podcast. I wanted to show the process of the observation I took and the path in which the participant took and thought stop motion was the best way to demonstrate this. After further interviews I will add more paths to this model to show the different ways people behave in an exhibition environment and see if the founding principles of exhibition design really do make an impact on the way someone behaves.

This bin idea has been designed to change people's behaviour of littering and creating an entertaining way to throw rubbish in the bin. It is quirky and humourous and does change the behaviour of passers by. The reactions are classic!

Amazing Piano Playing Stairs

This interactive installation is a based on a campaign to create more people to take the stairs. Swedish designers have made climbing the stairs fun and enjoyable to get people exercising more. The installation of large piano keys makes sound which makes people want to take the stairs as they are interested in what is going on as well as wanting to participate in this unusual installation.

Patrick Bérubé moved the floor of another exhibition room upwards to install the most frustrating trampoline i've ever seen. The ceiling is so low you have to bend in half if you want to get near the trampoline. Forget about jumping on it.

Jacob Dahlgren, I, the world, things, life, 2007

Jacob Dahlgren's I, The World, Things, Life fills a whole wall with dartboards. Visitors are invited to help themselves with the red darts on offer in nearby cardboard boxes and play a game of darts. Except that the exercise is absurd. How do you check if you've scored? Which red dart is your dart? Seen from afar, the wall dissolves into a big abstract painting that keeps changing as more people come inside the gallery and throw darts.

Francis Alÿs is a Belgian contemporary artist living in Mexico City. Above are stills from the short movie Paradox of Praxis 1, where Alÿs pushes a block of ice through the streets of Mexico City until it melts; serving as a way to mark time and measure existence.

Tara Donovans work, seems to represent that of global warming and environmental issues creating sculptural pieces out of plastic cups, fishing lines, and paper plates. Her sculptures are organic and beautiful, it captures a lot of the organic shapes of the ocean and its beauty being damaged by man kinds reckless consumerism and disposable lifestyles we lead today. These forms have a very minimalist feel to them, pure forms white space with the quality of detail.

Wayne Barrar : An expanding subterra.

A leading figure in New Zealand photographic circles, Wayne Barrar consistently challenges audiences to think about land use, place and borders in an increasingly controlled world. An Expanding Subterra brings together for the first time a body of work that Barrar has been working on for the last seven years. This project provides a timely insight into a highly industrialized and commodified underground, where vast areas are taken up storing data and nuclear waste, multinational organizations operate 24/7 and teams of workers continue to prospect for rare materials.

Heather Straka : The Asian.

The Asian is the first major solo exhibition by Heather Straka in a New Zealand public gallery. For this project Straka has commissioned a selection of artisans from Shenzhen, China to produce fifty high-end copies of one of her original ‘Asian Girl’ paintings. This promises to be an intriguing installation where ideas about the authentic and fake, truth and lie, original and copy are brought into question.

Milan 2010: Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka created an installation with hundreds of transparent plastic sticks at the Kartellshowroom in Milan last week.

Tokujin Yoshioka "created a serene world with numerous transparent prism sticks in plastic. The accumulation of transparent sticks is tinged with white color just like real snow. I believe that the installation will offer visitors extraordinary experiences as if stepping into the snowflake."

I love the work of Anne Wilsons "Errant Behaviours." The absolute detail produced in these small sewing kit materials creates a three dimensional sketch. The photographs look like drawing book sketches with charcoal and pencil. The way that these objects have been created to look like a small city is also incredible with how fragile and small the materials are.

Song Dong is a Bejing based artist who explores installations that combine aspects of performance, video, photography and sculpture. Waste Not is an installation of a collaboration of all the contents in her home. "waste not" was a prerequisite for survival. Viewers are able to walk around and navigate through all the materials.

Ksubi created a striking installation at Tokyo store Cannibis. True to the brands outlandish sense of presentation, the work "home away from home" featured eye catching designs along the length of its blue plastic walls. The work references tension between material comfort and a desire for simplicity. The work is inspired from the temporary shelters set up for the Japanese homeless.

Ksubi has not only been a world wide fashion label. The different forms of artwork that come along side this name are huge and differ from drawings to installation art. I tripped across some of Ksubi's installation shop layouts and love the way that it is incorporated into a store to create a completely different experience in an artistic space for customers.

Its experimental edge has led artists to examine the boundaries of other disciplines.” Installation artists have found opportunities to collaborate with other areas of study like anthropology, science and technology which creates a wider area of knowledge than just researching the visual aspects. “Installation is seen as moving beyond the physical boundary of a single space into a realm of negotiated interactivity and simultaneity.” (Thames and Hudson)

Ernesto Neto has incorporated his work with an architectural perspective by articulating spaces in buildings representing bodily membranes. The works are highly sensual and the experience that is created is heightened by the aroma of turmeric or cloves which visitors take in before the installation itself.
